First coming to prominence in the early '90s Hunter has since become one of the leading names in jazz, recording 17 albums. Hunter is noted for playing custom-made seven and eight-string guitars, on which he simultaneously plays basslines, rhythm guitar, and solos. Hunter's innovative guitar technique is described as "mind-boggling ... he's an agile improviser with an ear for great tone, and always has excellent players alongside him in order to make great music, not to show off." Hunter plays a custom-made, eight-string guitar made by luthier Ralph Novak of Novax Guitars. He plays the lead guitar on the top five strings (tuned ADGBe) and bass guitar (tuned EAD) on the bottom three strings simultaneously. With the addition of a Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere (a Leslie rotary speaker simulator), his unique style produces a sound similar to that of a Hammond organ -- an instrument he set out to imitate. In 2006, Hunter removed the top guitar string and had the neck of his guitar reworked and now plays a modified 7-string on the formerly-8 string body. Hunter has mentioned that because of his small hands, he had to move out of position to make use of the 8th string and thus wasn't using it much. A change in Hunter's style away from the organ sound into a more blues and distortion based sound happened at the same time. After removing the 8th string, Hunter retuned all of the strings up a half-step: F-Bflat-Eflat on the bass and Bflat-Eflat-Aflat-C on the guitar. TONIGHT: SCIENCE CAFE A BRIGHT SPOT FOR AMATEUR SCIENTISTSExtreme Light in Nano-Technology
Beet Street presents July Science Cafe focusing on the surprising use of intense light in advanced science on Wednesday, July 9 beginning at 6pm. Carmen S. Menoni will lead the discussion on The Use of Bright Extreme Ultraviolet Laser Beams in Nano-Science & Nano-Technology at Starry Night Espresso Cafe, 112 South College in Fort Collins. Carmen S. Menoni is a professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Colorado State University where she her PhD in Physics from Colorado State University in 1987. There are many applications in science and technology that are beyond the reach of visible light but can be accessed with extreme ultraviolet light. With wavelengths between 5-50 nm, extreme ultraviolet light is well suited to 'see' and 'print' smaller features. In this talk, Dr Menoni will describe exciting new applications that make use of the high brightness and short wavelength output from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lasers and specialized EUV optics to demonstrate imaging, patterning and ablation with nanoscale (<100 nm) spatial resolution. The talk will cover the basic concepts that are exploited in the implementation of these systems and the applications being pursued. The monthly Cafes have been quite popular, and it is recommended to arrive by 5:30pm to order a snack and get a good seat. Details on speakers, topics and location of future Science Cafes will be posted on the web, *http://www.beetstreet.org/en/Science-Cafe.html*. Held on the second Wednesday of each month, Science Cafe Fort Collins hosts expert scientists from a diverse range of disciplines, who make a short presentation followed by questions, answers and discussion among those in attendance. Science Cafes are free and open to the public. Seating is limited. The Science Cafe concept originated in English pubs in Leeds, U.K. in 1988. Since then, over 160 cafes, including the newest one in Fort Collins, have emerged around the world, stimulating dialog and aha!-moments as people connect science to their everyday world. Other Science Cafes in Colorado are held regularly in Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs. BIO for Carmen S.
